Medicare Supplement Plans

Medicare Supplement Plans are one of the 2 main paths to take when receiving Medicare benefits. They are also called Medigap. 10 Federally standardized plans A – N are offered by private insurance companies and only vary by price. Click Here for an overview of Medicare Supplements. They range in coverage from covering some or all of that Medicare Parts A and B don’t cover.

What providers can I see?

You can see any doctor in the nation who accepts Medicare.

Coverage limits

Medicare supplements will cover 365 more days of hospital care during ones lifetime and emergency care in a foreign country. Supplements do not cover additional days in a skilled nursing facility. While supplements will cover some of the costs not covered by Part A ans B like deductibles, copays or coinsurance, they don’t cover routine dental, vision or hearing care, hearing aids, eyeglasses or private duty nursing.

A good rule of thumb is that the more coverage a Medicare Supplement plan offers the more it will cost per month. The cost for the same plan in the same county will be priced very differently depending on the insurance company. Supplements cover expenses approved by Medicare Part A & B.

Deductible  Some plans pay you Part A & B yearly deductibles and some don’t.

Copay  There is one plan that requires Part B copays for doctor office visits  and emergency room visits.

Coinsurance  Some supplements have coinsurance instead of copays to share the cost.

When you can join

As soon as you become eligible for and join Medicare you can purchase a Medigap supplement. When you turn 65 you are considered “guaranteed issue” and your medical history cannot be considered. Once you have a Medicare Supplement you can drop it or apply for another one at any time. If you have been disabled for 2 years and you enroll in Medicare you are also considered “guaranteed issue” but the cost of your supplement will generally be more expensive. What if I changed my mind and now I want a Supplement?

If you are 65 years and 7 months old you will be subject to medical underwriting should you choose to try and purchase a Supplement. Insurers can refuse coverage after your “guaranteed issue” window expires.

What is “guaranteed renewable”?

Medicare Supplement plans are guaranteed to renew automatically every year as long as you pay your monthly premium on time.

Things to consider

How does health care fit into your budget? How much did you spend last year? Has anything changed? Do you have access to other health care coverage? How much time do you spend outside California? What doctors do you see on a regular basis? Do they belong to different networks? Is the possibility of seeing new doctors ok? What prescriptions do you take? What is your overall health?
